Grandchildren Are The Best

I don’t really have a card for you today because I have been away visiting my son, his fiancé and granddaughter in Alabama.  Rob had a convention to go to in Atlanta so I went along for a couple of days.  Then I rented a car and drove to Montgomery.  Of course, we were probably the only people in the world traveling south when Irma was going to hit.  Everyone tried to talk us out of it (including me!) but Rob wanted to go anyway.  I am really glad I did.

There were two amazing things that came out of this trip.  The first is me renting a car in Atlanta and driving to Montgomery by myself.  I live in Northern New York.  A traffic jam is five cars. I get nervous when I have less than five car lengths between me and the car in front of me.  Of course, it really did help that I was driving south when most people were driving north to get away from Irma.  Anyway, I did it.  I survived and I even made it to Montgomery despite Google Maps wanting me to make a couple of wrong turns.  Thankfully I believed the giant thruway signs over Google telling me to veer right when it should have been left (twice!)!

The other really great thing is a bad thing that turned into a great thing.  My 92 year old mother, my sister and brother-in law live in Savannah and they were under mandatory evacuation because of Irma so they came to Atlanta when I was still there.  We met for dinner.  It was great to see both of them because I hadn’t been down there in a while.  Luckily Irma missed Savannah for the most part and they were able to return quickly.

The best thing, of course, was that I got to see Emory Jade.  Emory is six months old and adorable (in looks).  Emory is a little cranky at times.  Ok, Emory is a lot cranky at times but she is still adorable.  When she smiles at you, it just lights you up!  She has these giant hazel eyes that look so sweet and innocent (except at 1 AM, 3 AM, 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM).  Yes, she wakes up a lot during the night which makes for a long next day.  Just look at this face.  She has her mama, daddy and grandmother wrapped around her finger!

PS:  Luckily Alabama was spared from the wrath of Irma.  We just got a little rain and wind.

  1. Susan, I’m so glad to hear that you and your family were spared the wrath of Mother Nature!! Good for you, bravely driving by yourself 🙂 Now you know you can do it! Enjoy your time with the little ones – as you know, they grow up so fast!
